Message From The Chair: Achieving 2020 Vision
The dedicated volunteers who drive MPPIA’s mission earned a well-deserved break at year-end following an extremely busy and productive 2019. You could say we’ve adjusted to the ‘new normal’ in production volumes in BC, and continue to adapt, improve and grow to meet capacity. But we’re also taking a longer view of our business and future prospects on behalf of the many who wish to participate in a healthy film and television industry in BC. In 2019, this meant developing more targeted collaborations with key industry groups — to understand and act on strategies that make the BC production industry not just bigger, but better.
A better industry in BC means: better opportunities for BC-based creatives to reap the advantages of a of thriving international production landscape right here in our province; better engagement with our host communities and regions, government and business community partners; better industry environmental sustainability strategies and practices that make a bigger difference; better education and training models that build and strengthen our workforce in the right ways; and a better path forward to equity and inclusion strategies that lead to real and lasting change.
These same values and priorities will continue to inform our vision and work in 2020 — none of which would be achieveable without the commitment of time and resources from our members and volunteer board. BC is known across the industry landscape, both in Canada and the US, for our collaborative approach to the BC business. Today, industry engagement has never been better, with strong participation and leadership from our studios and suppliers, the spectrum of our labour organizations, the CMPA BC and MPA Canada, the A&VFX Alliance, Creative BC and the Vancouver Economic Commission. It’s our unique collaboration that helps us stay on top of our game, develop better opportunities for BC interests and manage our value proposition for a strong future. I look forward to accomplishing much more together in 2020.
Happy new year,
Peter Leitch, Chair
